About the Trust

Our mission is to provide discretionary grants that make a meaningful difference to young people under 25 facing hardship, disability, and barriers to education across England and Wales.

Our Purpose

The Philip O'Donnell Charitable Trust was established to help young people under the age of 25 who are experiencing need, hardship, or distress due to social or economic circumstances, or due to mental, physical, or sensory disabilities.

We aim to further the education (including social and physical training) of young people under 25, helping them overcome barriers and achieve their potential.

All grants are made at the discretion of the trustees, who consider each application individually based on the information provided.

What We Do

We provide grants to individuals in four main areas:

Education & Training

Supporting access to education and skill development through grants for course fees, books, equipment, and other learning costs.

Disability Support

Helping young people with disabilities through grants for equipment, adaptations, or support services that improve quality of life.

Hardship Relief

Providing assistance for basic living costs, emergency needs, and essential items during times of financial difficulty.

Health & Wellbeing

Supporting health-related costs, therapies, and activities that promote physical and mental wellbeing.

Who We Help

We support young people under 25 who are:

  • Experiencing need, hardship, or distress due to social or economic circumstances
  • Living with mental, physical, or sensory disabilities
  • Facing barriers to education and training
  • In need of support for health and wellbeing
  • Resident in England or Wales

We make grants to individuals, not organisations. Applications can be made by the young person themselves, or by someone supporting them (such as a parent, carer, teacher, or social worker).

Where We Operate

We provide grants to young people living in England and Wales.

Our trustees consider applications from across these nations, with decisions made based on the individual circumstances described in each application.

If you live outside England and Wales, we regret that we are unable to consider your application at this time.

Our Approach

We believe in a compassionate, individualised approach to grant-making:

Discretionary Decisions

Each application is considered individually by the trustees, who use their discretion to assess need and potential impact.

Simple Process

We aim to keep our application process as straightforward as possible while gathering the information needed to make fair decisions.

Respectful Consideration

We treat all applications with respect and confidentiality, understanding that applying for help can be difficult.

Timely Responses

We aim to respond to all applications within 8 weeks, letting applicants know whether we can help.
